As Ianto predicted, no one notices when the tall man steps out of a coffee shop with a tiny pregnant woman on his arm.

Teyla may notice the cold, though.

"My car's not far," Ianto says.

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

"I was worried more about damp than dirty," he says, throwing his tie over his shoulder, and finds a somewhat larger dishtowel in one of the drawers. "This should do."

"Thank you," Teyla says primly, and ties the towel around her waist.

He runs the water and squirts in some dish soap. "I don't eat at home often."

"Your work is very time-consuming, I would imagine."

Ianto nods as he rolls up his sleeves. "Very much. I have to come to the bar if I want a good night's sleep."

"Is that not dangerous?" Teyla asks, pushing her sleeves up above her elbows as well. "You cannot be expected to do your job properly if you do not have sufficient sleep."

She knows. She's been there. Nightmares aren't terribly conducive to alertness.

Ianto shrugs and starts to wash the first cup. "It doesn't come up that often, really."

They're all running on Jack's circadian rhythms, it would seem.

Teyla nods. "I suppose it is inevitable on occasion. I myself have used the bar as a place of rest from time to time."

He hands her the soapy cup. "And most of the time I don't mind being at the Hub so much. It's better than being--well, anywhere else, just about."

He starts another.

Teyla rinses the cup and sets it in the dish rack. "Then you enjoy your work?"

He starts to say yes and then starts to say no, and then shrugs. "It has its rewards. You can't do a job like this and not love it, even when you resent it. You know?"

Teyla considers this for a moment. "I can...understand that."

"A few months ago," Ianto says slowly, "we were investigating some disappearances in the country, and Toshiko--one of the girls I work with--and I were, er, taken. And it was my first field assignment and everything went wrong . . . and I lost it a bit. I couldn't see how our being in danger was worth what we'd learn, and she said it was, that it was our duty to protect people.

"Which is something I'm trying to remember every day, now. This job isn't about us. It's about them." He nods out the window, to the city outside.

Teyla nods. It's something she understands much better. "It is a love of your people, then, that keeps you going, not the love of your work."

He nods slowly. "Kind of all mixed up together, but yeah. It all comes down to people."

"Many things do," Teyla says quietly.

"The only thing worth living for," he says with a small Ianto-ish smile.

"Very true," Teyla says, still quietly and not quite smiling.

He hands her the last plate to be rinsed.

"Do you want to go back to the bar, or see the city a little first?"

She does smile a little at that. "I would very much like to see the city, if you do not have something else you need to be doing."

"Nothing I can't use to bar to catch up on--unless I get called in." He hangs the tea towel over the edge of the sink. "That, I can't predict."

"That seems to be something of a constant," Teyla says, untying the towel from around her waist.

"Constantly unpredictable," Ianto says with a laugh. "There's an oxymoron.

"Let's see if I don't have a hoodie or something you could wear. It's cold out."

He opens a drawer in his bureau, and pulls out a blue zipped sweatshirt. "This might fit, if you zip from the top."

"Thank you," Teyla says, pulling on the sweatshirt. She does manage to get it zipped up properly. It probably helps that she was very small before her current condition.

"You're welcome." He puts his jacket and coat back on and holds out his arm to her.
