It's been very strange for the last few days without you. I don't think I'd realised how much I've come to rely on talking to you to unwind from the day and get my thoughts in order, or how much I've grown to like you being the last person I talk to at night and the first person I want to see in the morning.
I spent the weekend with family: my sister-in-law Eleanor gave birth to their first child, a boy they're naming Rhodri Martin Jones. Everyone says Rhodri looks just like Euan but I don't see it quite yet--he looks like most newborns to me, a bit squashed and round. Give him a few weeks and I'll probably see the resemblance. (He does have our eyes, though: very big and blue.)
Rhodri was born Friday afternoon and I drove up to Aberdare Friday night, and the rest of the family except for Ellie's mother (who'd been there the last week and stayed at the birthing center with Ellie) came up from various points Saturday. It was the longest I've been around so many members of my family for almost a year, plus Eleanor's parents (her father was one of our teachers at school so he tends to treat us like we're still his students, just taller), and it was jarring to realise that these are people who've known me my entire life and I couldn't think of much to say to any of them.
Though I should add that Friday night Euan and I had a good talk about various things--as much as I could tell him, including you, though I left out the parts about you being in the military and on a base in another galaxy. (Like the rest of my family he thinks I work for the Tourism board. "Wasting my mind in a nothing job" is how my dad puts it, but fortunately he had other things to think about this weekend and we didn't get into it.)
I came home Saturday afternoon. Mum and Eleanor's mum will be staying another few days to help them get settled, and in a few weeks I'll be back in Aberdare to see Rhodri christened.
It's strange, isn't it, when a baby's born. Last week there was no such person as Rhodri Jones, and now there is, and soon he'll start showing us what kind of person he is. I hope I get to see it.
I miss you like crazy. I love you.
