I tried to involve myself with someone who was... unattainable... once, and... I ended up getting very badly hurt. I don't regret it, because of Matt, but... It did still hurt. A lot. So maybe my advice is overly cautious. I wouldn't want any friend to go through that, especially someone who'd already experienced a recent loss.
That said, I think you know what you're doing. You're not me, and Jack isn't Mello. You have more sense, and more experience, and I'm quite sure that Jack doesn't openly resent you and secretly want to punish you. (I don't think he's a sex addict, either.) He does care about you, and I don't think you have any illusions about him. You'll be fine.
...And besides, no matter what happens, it can't possibly be worse than tormenting yourself about it like you have been.
