Your package arrived today. I have no idea what to do with the rods but I'm sure I can figure it out. The mead will have to wait until I'm off-duty again.

Martha sent me a journal the other day with some photographs of her own, and I've put your pictures in there as well for the time being. Next time you send me a picture of you, I hope you're more than a background figure. (Sheppard looks exactly how I imagined, right down to the perma-bedhead.)

I'm sorry I was an arse yesterday. I do get a little jealous sometimes--or more realistically, envious, because they get to spend time with you and I don't. And all this happening here--it's shaping up to be much more than it initially appeared, and we're all under some stress. That's no excuse, of course.

When things are back to normal you and I can have a good long talk, I hope.

Ianto is a nickname: my name is actually Ifan, but . . . well, Welsh. I can't explain it any better than that.

So what exactly am I calling you? What's the difference between Ifan and Ianto? Since, Ianto does't really work as a nickname since it's longer.

Welsh has a lot of first names: we were a few centuries behind the rest of Europe is adopting last names to identify people, and even then for a while it would be still be the "son of/daughter of" construction. Like, I would be Ifan ap Martyn, for example.

Ifan is a Welsh variation of John, and Ianto is a pet name for Ifan. It's basically like calling me Johnny instead of John. Exactly how that came to be I really don't know, but I don't know how people got Hank from Henry, either.

Nicknames aren't always about shortening a name; in old English they were a way to express relationships.
