For the record, I'm not tone-deaf. I can hear the notes just fine, and I know I'm out of key. I just don't seem to be able to do anything about it.

I . . . don't know how to correct that either. I can hit C, for instance, if I have a tuning fork or someone playing C for me, but I can't just belt a C without help.

Well, that's a little different. Most people are that way unless they have perfect pitch. With me, I can hear a C and end up somewhere around an F#.
